Behind the Scenes: Writers Revealed at Home of the Arts
Behind the Scenes: Writers Revealed at HOTA
I had the privilege of working on Writers Revealed, a landmark exhibition at Home of the Arts (HOTA), in collaboration with curators and conservators from the National Portrait Gallery in London and the British Library. My role focused on the safe handling and installation of historically significant portraits of literary giants from Shakespeare to Zadie Smith. It was an incredible experience to witness the transformation of the exhibition space and be part of the meticulous work that brings these cultural treasures to life.
What is Art Conservation?
What is Art Conservation?
Art conservation is the careful preservation, protection, and restoration of artworks—safeguarding their historical, cultural, and aesthetic value for generations to come. It involves three main practices: preventive conservation (protecting art from damage through proper environment and handling), curative conservation (diagnosing and treating deterioration), and restoration (bringing artworks back to visual harmony while respecting their original character). Like a doctor for art, a professional conservator assesses each piece and applies the most appropriate care. In Australia, qualified conservators are members of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM), and conservation work should always be entrusted to a Professional Member (PM AICCM).
